Event Photography Pricing
What event photography costs in Australia
Event photography in Australia usually costs between $280 and $450 per hour, with most corporate bookings landing around $1,200 for a half day, exclusive of GST. What moves the number is coverage time, how fast you need the edited images back and whether the job needs a second photographer.
What changes the price
Three things move a quote more than anything else. Coverage time is the obvious one. Turnaround is the next, because same-day or overnight delivery means an editor working while the event is still running. The third is whether one photographer can cover the room or whether the schedule needs two (or more).
We typically edit 30 to 50 images per hour. That is the figure behind any turnaround promise, and it is worth asking any photographer for theirs, because a fast quote with no editing capacity behind it turns into a slow delivery.
Experience
A new photographer to the industry may simply be building up their skills and experience and trying to pickup new clients. Not understanding the value they give to clients and may have less overheads.
Story time: We had one client for example book us last minute because the photographer they had booked did not have Public Liability insurance (we carry insurance for $20 Million).
Limited Equipment
Some photographers may carry the bare bones to get a job done. One camera, one or two lenses, one flash. Compared to an seasoned professional photographer who carries a minimum of two cameras, flashes on and off camera, studio lighting for media wall, colour gels to match your room lighting and a range of lenses – wide angles, telephoto lenses and even super telephoto lenses (the ones you see used by sports photographers on the field).
Story time: We’ve heard stories of a photographer having to borrow camera batteries just to get through the job because they simply did not have enough.
Cost of doing Business
Besides the cost of owning the equipment, photographers also have subscription and software costs to keep up with. The new photographer may not be editing your photos because they simply load up a free version of Canva and run a quick auto adjustment on your images. A real photographer will tweak, adjust and make your image pop.
Are you getting your photos delivered on some sort of file sharing platform all together or are you images uploaded to a nicely curated gallery with gallery access?
Does your photographer offer backups of your images or do they simply delete them once the files are delivered because they don’t have to spend money no storage?
