The Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) is Australia’s largest convention and exhibition centre, located in the South Wharf precinct along the Yarra River. The MCEC is built for large-scale events. With its main plenary space holding up to 5,000 guests, tiered exhibition halls, and purpose-built breakout rooms, it handles everything from international trade shows to intimate board meetings. The venue’s house lighting and rigging infrastructure are designed for professional production — which also means your event photographer has everything they need to capture your event at its best, without workarounds.
There are also spaces for trade stalls and information booths to be set up – the kind where people wander about, ask questions and are all too happy to pose for photographs. This kind of setup is perfect for us as well – we like to capture people in their element, and people are always excited when talking about their products and brands.
Accommodation Near the MCEC
One of the standout features of the MCEC is that it’s Australia’s only convention and exhibition centre with onsite accommodation.
The Novotel Melbourne South Wharf connects directly to the Exhibition Centre via the ground floor, while the Pan Pacific Hotel Melbourne links to the Convention Centre at level 1 – both meaning delegates can go from their room to the event floor without stepping outside.
Within a 10-minute walk you have five solid options: AC Hotel by Marriott Melbourne Southbank, Crowne Plaza Melbourne, Oakwood Premier Melbourne (great for multi-day conferences given the apartment-style rooms), Shadow Play by Peppers, and the sustainability-focused 1 Hotel Melbourne.
For larger events where delegate numbers spill over, the Crown precinct on Southbank is around 15 minutes away and offers three properties – Crown Towers, Crown Metropol and Crown Promenade – covering everything from luxury to mid-range.

Is there parking at the MCEC?
Wilson Parking operates a secure underground car park directly at the Exhibition Centre, with flexible rates and accessible parking with lift access to Doors 1, 6 and 10. There is also parking at DFO South Wharf which is a short walk to MCEC.
Is the MCEC accessible?
Yes. The MCEC is fully accessible with wheelchair access and lift access throughout the venue. Accessible parking is available in the Wilson Parking car park with lift access to Doors 1, 6 and 10. The venue also has assisted hearing facilities, a Changing Places facility for visitors with high support needs, and is a registered Hidden Disabilities Sunflower venue - meaning staff are trained to recognise and support guests who may need extra assistance. Does the MCEC have in-house AV?
Yes. The MCEC has its own in-house AV team covering audio, vision, lighting, rigging, staging, hybrid event streaming, recording and broadcasting. They work across all event types from conferences and exhibitions through to gala dinners and concerts. You can work directly with their AV planners when booking your event.
Is there public transport to the MCEC?
There are trams that stop at the MCEC entry. The closest train station is Southern Cross station and a short walk or tram ride to MCEC.
